SEO and AEO: Do You Need Both, or Just One?

Budgets are limited and both disciplines take real work. Here's how to think about whether your B2B company needs SEO, AEO, or both — and in what order.

Do You Need Both SEO and AEO?

Yes, for almost any B2B company — but not necessarily at the same time or with the same budget split. SEO and AEO cover two different moments in a buyer’s search, and skipping one leaves a real gap in how prospects find you.

When SEO Should Come First

If your site is new or has little existing content, build the SEO foundation first: technical health, a real content hub, pages that can actually rank. AEO depends on that foundation — AI tools still pull heavily from pages that are already well-ranked and well-structured. Trying to “do AEO” on a site with no SEO foundation is building on sand.

In practice, that means the first few months of a new site’s content plan should be judged almost entirely on SEO fundamentals — is the hub-and-spoke structure in place, is the technical setup clean, are you targeting terms you can realistically win. AEO isn’t a separate track running in parallel at this stage; it’s a writing discipline you apply while you build the SEO foundation, not a second project competing for the same limited time.

When AEO Becomes Worth Prioritizing

Once the SEO foundation is in place, AEO is largely a matter of how you write, not a separate budget line: direct answers up top, self-contained sections, clear structure. It’s less “a new initiative” and more “a better version of the content work you’re already doing.”

AEO becomes worth actively prioritizing — tracking citations, auditing older content for answer-first structure, expanding into more question-driven formats — once a site has enough ranking pages that AI tools are already pulling from it at least occasionally. Before that point, there’s little for AEO effort to compound on top of.

Can You Skip One Entirely?

Skipping SEO to focus only on AEO doesn’t really work — there’s no reliable way to earn AI citations without the underlying search authority that comes from SEO fundamentals. Skipping AEO is more survivable short-term, but it means missing the growing share of buyers who ask an AI tool to shortlist vendors before they ever open Google.

A Framework for Where to Focus, by Site Stage

Site stage Primary focus AEO role
Brand-new domain, little content SEO fundamentals: technical health, hub-and-spoke structure, winnable keyword targets Write answer-first from day one, but don’t track or optimize for citations yet — there’s not enough ranking content for AI tools to pull from.
Established content, weak structure Consolidate into a real hub-and-spoke cluster; fix cannibalization; refresh striking-distance pages Rework existing pages into answer-first format as you refresh them — this is often the highest-leverage AEO move available.
Solid rankings, ready to expand Maintain and extend SEO; start actively tracking AI citations Full priority: audit for gaps, monitor citation presence, expand into more comparison and question-driven content.

A Quick Worked Example

Say a company has a two-year-old site with decent rankings on a handful of terms, but the content was written before anyone thought about AI answers — long, meandering posts with the useful information buried in paragraph six. The instinct might be to write a batch of brand-new “AEO content.” The better move is usually to refresh what’s already ranking: pull the buried answer up to the top of each existing page, add a direct response under each heading, and let the site’s existing authority do the work that a brand-new page would take months to earn on its own. New AEO-specific content comes after that refresh, not instead of it.

A Common Mistake to Avoid

Treating AEO as a checklist to bolt onto finished content — adding a “quick summary” paragraph at the top of an otherwise unchanged post — rarely works well. The answer-first structure needs to shape the whole piece, including which questions get their own heading in the first place. A summary paragraph slapped onto old structure reads as an afterthought to both readers and AI tools.

Quick Answers

Should a brand-new site invest in AEO before it has any rankings? Write answer-first from the start, but don’t expect citations yet — SEO authority has to exist first.

Is AEO more important than SEO in 2026? No — it’s additive. Sites with no SEO foundation don’t get AEO benefits just by restructuring content.

How do I know when to shift more effort toward AEO? When your site has enough ranking pages that manual checks (running your target questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews) start showing occasional citations already.

The Practical Answer

Build the SEO foundation with AEO-friendly structure from day one — direct answers, clear headings, real depth — rather than treating them as two separate projects. That’s the approach behind Ronin’s SEO & AEO hub, and the reasoning is laid out in full in AEO vs SEO for B2B Companies.
